Electricity storage requirements to support the transition towards high renewable penetration levels – Application to the Greek power system

This paper investigates the electricity storage requirements to support transition towards a high renewable energy source (RES) penetration in cost-optimal manner. The achieved reduction of curtailments and decrease total generation cost system are quantified against counterfactual scenario without storage. A methodology is presented determine optimum mix short- medium-duration needed operation at increased RES levels, using mixed integer linear programming mathematical optimization. Greek power serves as realistic study case, its planned development for year 2030, with targeted annual order 60%. Li-ion batteries pumped-hydro selected representative technologies include mix, assuming energy-to-power ratios up 6 h former 10 latter. It shown that introduction suitable mixture facilities may improve integration and, same time, reduce extent entirely compensates full storage, thus allowing net economic benefit system. portfolio case level combines 2-h 6-h stations, an aggregate capacity new between 1250 MW 1750 MW, on top existing 700 open-loop pumped hydro plants. vary balance particularly PV integration.
